Indictment

A written document that charges an individual of committing an act or omitting the commitment of an act that is punishable by law. The goal of an indictment is to inform the accused party of the charges brought against him/her so they can prepare a defense. An indictment is served by a prosecutor and issued by a grand jury against the individual who is charged with committing a crime.
